Effective Anger Management Training requires that the program incorporate a number of core components. Understanding Anger as a Secondary EmotionFirst, students in the Anger Management class must understand that anger is a secondary emotion, and learn to identify the primary emotion and the underlying unmet need to which it points. This was discussed previously in Understanding Anger. Stress Management as a Stepping Stone to Anger ManagementStress management techniques are incorporated into the Anger Management Program. This includes visualization, relaxation and healing metaphor techniques. When a person knows how to reduce stress, it lessens the likelihood of getting triggered into a rage or anger outburst. Learning Effective CommunicationMuch of the anger that occurs in relationships comes from lack of communication skills. We constantly meet people who fail to listen to others, put each other down, are judgmental and trying to get the best of each other. Hence, the Anger Management Program places emphasis on teaching effective communication - that is, learning to communicate in calm and respectful ways, listening from the heart, speaking of personal experience without judgment and desiring to be in a mutual, non-violent relationship. Learning Emotional IntelligenceThe term "emotional intelligence" was coined by a science writer for the New York Times, Daniel Goleman in his book Emotional Intelligence (1995). Goleman gleaned research that showed IQ bore little relationship to success or happiness in life. Instead, what he called "emotional intelligence" is a much stronger predictor of happiness and success. "Emotional Intelligence" is defined as the ability to perceive emotions and to use them to facilitate thinking, along with an ability to manage emotions and understand emotional meanings. The Anger Management Program stresses self-examination in an effort to improve emotional intelligence. For more information |
